Growing up around Madonna Inn, there are a few smells and tastes that bring me back to my childhood years in an instant. Be it an ooey-gooey grilled cheese, a tall mug of creamy hot coco with a dollop of whipped cream, or even a swipe of butter-cream frosting... I am at once transported of the beautiful sensory simplicity that was my adolescence. And while I will always have a special place in my heart (and stomach) for these treats, there is no indulgence with more sentimental prestige than a chocolate chip cookie.
Classic, compact, and ever-so portable, the almighty chocolate chip cookie is a college student’s saving grace. I can’t even recall how many lectures I wouldn’t have made it through if not for the affirmation that warm, buttery, chocolaty goodness was in my very near future. After a long and arduous day at campus, nothing quite compares to a soft cookie straight from the (microwave) oven. The aroma alone is one of the best anti-anxiety remedies I have come to find; but with one bite I feel as if I’m getting a hug from mama, even if I’m merely being hugged by my computer chair at the school library.
Life itself is the proverbial chocolate chip cookie: sometimes a little hard, sometimes a little crumbly, and sometimes even a little nutty! But regardless of all the flaws in even the worst batch of cookies there is always, ALWAYS a lingering sweetness that is not to be overlooked. A velvety chocolate chip melts in my mouth as I write this very post, and I can’t help but smile thinking about all the days that a simple cookie has gotten me by.
Last week was finals for Cal Poly students, and I definitely found myself seeking out some edible therapy—as I’m sure many other bookworms did. Through all the stress, chaos, and long nights illuminated by a glowing laptop, I remind myself that life is sweeter when I just take it "one cookie at a time.”
